About

The ancient city of Laertes is one of the significant ancient settlements in the Alanya region. It was founded on the southern slopes of Mount Cebel-i Reis, at the entrance to the Dim Valley in the Taurus Mountains. It was located within the borders of the region known as Mountainous Cilicia in antiquity.

What Is There to See in Laertes?

Among the ruins that have survived to the present day in the city are the agora, a seating structure known as an exedra, a bathhouse, cisterns, a theater, and houses. In addition, the ruins of temples dedicated to Emperor Claudius, Apollo, and Zeus Megistos can be seen in the ancient settlement.

The city’s necropolis is located in the southern section. In this area, numerous ossuary fragments reflecting the burial culture of the ancient period, along with the pedestals on which they were placed, can be seen.

The History of Laertes

One of the significant finds indicating that Laertes’ history stretches back quite far is a stone inscription found in the city and dated to the 7th century BCE. This artifact is currently on display at the Alanya Archaeology Museum.

A significant portion of the structures visible in the city today date back to the Roman Period. Official promotional materials for Alanya note that Laertes experienced a particularly prosperous period between the 1st and 3rd centuries CE.

Suggestions for Your Visit

Unlike the tourist attractions in the coastal area, Laertes is situated in a mountainous region, making it a wonderful alternative for those who wish to combine a historical tour with nature and scenic views. It is recommended to set aside sufficient time for the tour to comfortably explore the entire ancient site.
