About
Located within Alanya Castle, the Church of St. George—also known as the Church of Hagios Georgios—is one of Alanya’s most significant historical structures dating back to the Byzantine era. The structure is situated within the Inner Castle, one of the highest sections of Alanya Castle.
According to official cultural sources, the church is dated to the 6th century. This feature demonstrates that the structure bears significant traces not only from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods but also from earlier eras.
Although the church is small in scale, its architectural design is striking. Its layout, which closely resembles a four-leaf clover plan, and the dome at its center are among the structure’s distinctive features. Traces indicating that frescoes once adorned the walls of the building are also present.
Alanya Castle is a large defensive and settlement area that has been used by various civilizations throughout history. The Church of St. George is particularly significant because it is one of the structures representing the Byzantine period within the castle.
The Inner Castle area, where the church is located, is also one of the key vantage points offering views of the Alanya Peninsula and the Mediterranean Sea. During a visit, visitors can also see the Inner Castle’s other archaeological remains and historic cisterns.
