About

The ancient city of Iotape is one of the significant historical settlements located along the coastal route between Alanya and Gazipaşa. Thanks to its location on the Mediterranean coast, visitors can enjoy both the archaeological ruins and the natural scenery.

The city’s name is associated with Iotape, the wife of King Antiochus IV of Commagene. The site, which was inhabited during the Roman and Byzantine periods, features various architectural remains that have survived to the present day.

What Is There to See in the Ancient City?

In Iotape, visitors can see the acropolis, the harbor area, the remains of a bathhouse, a basilica, a necropolis, and various other architectural ruins. The ancient settlement’s small natural harbor is one of the key features illustrating the region’s historical connection to the sea.

The elevated section extending toward the sea is one of the ancient city’s most striking features. From here, visitors can see the Mediterranean coastline and the surrounding coves.

History and the Sea Come Together

One of the features that sets Iotape apart from other ancient cities around Alanya is its location right by the sea. Having the Mediterranean Sea view right next to you as you wander among the historical ruins makes the area particularly appealing to visitors interested in photography.

Visiting Tips

Visiting in the morning or afternoon, when the sun is lower in the sky, can make for a more comfortable experience, especially during hot weather. Since you’ll be walking around the ancient city, it’s best to wear comfortable, non-slip shoes.

During a day trip from Alanya toward Gazipaşa, Iotape can be included in the itinerary along with other natural and historical sites along the route.
