About

Alara Castle is a historic defensive structure situated on a high, steep cliff along the banks of the Alara River. Thanks to its location, it commands a view of the surrounding valley and the transportation routes used in the past.

The castle was used during the reign of Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I to ensure the security of the road between Antalya and Alanya and to maintain control over the active trade routes of the time.

What Can You See at the Castle?

After climbing to the castle, you can see the remains of historic walls and traces of defensive structures. The castle’s elevated position also offers a bird’s-eye view of the Alara River valley and the surrounding natural areas. Official tourism promotions specifically highlight that, after the challenging climb, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the natural landscape from the ramparts.

A Tour Combined with Alara Han

Located very close to the area where Alara Castle stands is the 13th-century Alara Han. Alara Han is an important Seljuk caravanserai built along the banks of the Alara River during the reign of Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I.

For this reason, it is possible to include Alara Castle, Alara Han, and the Alara River in the same tour itinerary. This way, visitors can see both historical structures from the Seljuk period and the region’s natural beauty along a single route.

Visitor Recommendations

Alara Castle requires more physical effort than a typical historic city tour. Due to the steep ascent, avoiding the midday hours—especially on hot summer days—can make for a more comfortable visit.

It is also recommended to set aside enough time for taking photos and enjoying the surrounding scenery.
