Ehmedek (Middle Castle)
Located in the northern section of Alanya Castle, Ehmedek is one of the castle’s most important historical areas, featuring defensive structures, towers, and cisterns dating back to the Seljuk period, as well as views of Alanya.

About
Ehmedek is a group of historic defensive structures located on a vantage point north of Alanya Castle. In historical sources, it is also referred to as Orta Kale. While the Inner Castle section of Alanya Castle is situated at the summit of the peninsula, Ehmedek forms one of the key defensive points on the northern slope.
The Importance of Ehmedek in Defense
Ehmedek was built at a strategic point to defend against potential land-based attacks and to protect the Seljuk sultan’s palace. The structure consists of two separate defensive sections, each featuring three towers.
In Seljuk urban architecture, fortifications of this type—known as Ehmedek—were used as defensive structures housing military garrisons. The Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s art history resource describes Ehmedek at Alanya Castle as an important example that has survived from the Seljuk period to the present day.
What Can Be Seen at Ehmedek?
In addition to the defensive towers and walls, the complex includes three large cisterns, a small bathhouse, and rooms of various sizes. A second protective wall is also located in front of the fortress walls on the northern and eastern facades.
One of the interesting details of Ehmedek is the depictions of ships from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods visible on the castle walls.
Ehmedek on the Alanya Castle Route
Evaluating Ehmedek not in isolation but alongside Alanya Castle’s other historical structures creates a more comprehensive tour. Alanya Castle features a 6.5-kilometer-long wall system, and the route of the walls connects important landmarks such as Ehmedek, İçkale, Tophane, Tersane, and Kızılkule.
Tips for Your Visit
Thanks to Ehmedek’s elevated location, visitors can enjoy views of Alanya and its surroundings in addition to the historic structures. It is an ideal spot for photography on clear days.
Visitors planning to explore the entire Alanya Castle are advised to set aside extra time for Ehmedek.
