Alanya Castle Hiking Trail
The Alanya Castle Walking Route begins at the upper station of the cable car and takes you through Ehmedek, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Akşebe Sultan Mosque, the Bedesten, traditional Alanya houses, and the historic sites around the Inner Castle—all on foot—combining history with Mediterranean views.

About
The Alanya Castle Walking Trail is one of the city’s most unique tour routes for those who want to explore Alanya’s history, traditional urban fabric, and Mediterranean views on foot.
Located on the historic peninsula, Alanya Castle consists of more than just the Inner Castle. Within the castle walls, you’ll find fortifications, cisterns, mosques, prayer rooms, traditional Alanya houses, former living quarters, and numerous historic structures dating from various periods.
For this reason, exploring Alanya Castle on foot—rather than simply driving up and visiting a single spot—offers the opportunity to experience the region’s historical fabric up close.
You Can Start the Hike from the Cable Car
One of the easiest ways to begin the hiking route is to take the Alanya Cable Car from the Damlataş area up toward the castle.
During the cable car ride, you can enjoy panoramic views of Cleopatra Beach, the city center, and the Mediterranean Sea from above. Once you reach the upper station, you can access the walking paths within Alanya Castle.
As part of the pedestrianization efforts carried out by the Alanya Municipality, walking paths have been created connecting the cable car to the historical sites within the castle.
Ehmedek – Middle Castle
One of the route’s key stops is Ehmedek.
Also known as Orta Kale, Ehmedek is situated in a strategic location in the northern section of Alanya Castle. Used for defensive purposes during the Seljuk period, the structure is also one of the castle’s key historical sites.
From the walking paths around Ehmedek, it is possible to view Alanya’s cityscape and seascape from different angles.
Süleymaniye Mosque
Continuing the walk from Ehmedek, one of the route’s key stops is the Süleymaniye Mosque.
Also known as the Castle Mosque, this structure is an important part of Alanya Castle’s historical fabric. The stone paths, traditional houses, and old settlement fabric surrounding it form one of the most distinctive sections of the walk.
The walking paths between the Süleymaniye Mosque and the Inner Castle have been arranged to facilitate pedestrian access while preserving the historic fabric.
Akşebe Sultan Mosque and Tomb
One of the important Seljuk monuments that can be seen during the castle walk is the Akşebe Sultan Mosque and Tomb.
Dating back to 1230, this structure is one of the important monumental buildings remaining from the Seljuk period at Alanya Castle.
Since it is located along the route between the cable car and the Inner Castle, it can easily be added to the walking route.
Traditional Alanya Houses
One of the most beautiful aspects of the Alanya Castle Walking Route is not only the monumental structures but also the opportunity to see traces of old Alanya life.
Along the narrow streets inside the castle, you can see traditional Alanya houses, stone walls, gardens, cisterns, and old residential areas.
This section is particularly fascinating for visitors who want to see what Alanya’s settlement structure was like in the past.
The Bedesten and Historic Structures
Another important site to see during the walk is the Bedesten.
The Bedesten—one of the historic commercial structures within the castle—and the old streets surrounding it demonstrate that Alanya was not merely a military fortress but also an important settlement where daily life flourished in the past.
Thanks to improvements made to the pedestrian paths between the Bedesten and the Inner Castle, this area can be explored on foot.
Inner Castle
One of the route’s most important stops is the Inner Castle, located at the summit of the historic peninsula.
Perched at the summit of the peninsula, approximately 250 meters above sea level, the Inner Castle is one of the most significant historical sections of Alanya Castle.
Inside the Inner Castle, you can see structures and ruins bearing traces of the Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods.
Thanks to its elevated position, the area around the Inner Castle also offers some truly breathtaking vantage points for viewing the Mediterranean Sea and Alanya.
Take a Break to Enjoy the Views
The castle walk should not be thought of merely as a route for visiting historical structures.
At various points along the walking paths, you’ll encounter different views of Alanya’s city center, Cleopatra Beach, the harbor, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Taurus Mountains.
Therefore, rather than rushing through the route, taking breaks at the scenic spots and exploring the castle’s atmosphere makes for a more enjoyable trip.
How Much Time Should You Set Aside?
The total time spent on the route varies depending on the sites you plan to visit and the breaks you take.
Those who wish to explore Ehmedek, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Bedesten, the Inner Castle, and nearby historical sites—rather than just walking—should set aside a few hours.
Visitors who want to take photos, stop at scenic viewpoints, and explore the historic structures in detail can set aside more time.
Best Time for a Walk
Spring and fall are among the most comfortable times of year for walking around Alanya Castle.
Since the weather can get quite hot in the summer, it’s best to visit in the morning or late afternoon. The sun’s intensity can be particularly high around noon.
It is recommended that you bring drinking water, protect yourself from the sun, and wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for stone or sloped paths.
Recommended Castle Route
You can plan the route as follows:
Damlataş → Alanya Cable Car → Ehmedek → Süleymaniye Mosque → Akşebe Sultan Mosque and Tomb → Traditional Alanya Houses → Bedesten → Inner Castle
Depending on the time available and walking conditions, other historical sites within the castle can also be added to the route.
Those wishing to take a longer tour can continue the walk toward Tophane, Kızılkule, and İskele.
The Alanya Castle Walking Route is one of the most beautiful walks you can take in Alanya for those who want to experience history, nature, the traditional urban fabric, and Mediterranean views all in one trip.
